Big Blue cupcake, created by an ODU fan, unveiled as Carolina Cupcakery’s 150th flavor

Carolina Cupcakery unveiled their latest flavor, the Big Blue, created by Christie Sykes, cupcake- and ODU enthusiast. The presentation, made July 1, 2010 at the Granby Theater in Norfolk, marks the cupcakery’s 150th flavor and unofficially gives them claim to Most Cupcake Varieties by a US cupcake bakery.

Norfolk blueblood: Christie Sykes is a Norfolk native with roots in all aspects of her life. She is a Norfolk resident, an ODU graduate, a kindergarten teacher at Norfolk Collegiate School and an active ODU Big Blue Booster and Tailgater.

For her prize, Ms. Sykes received a trophy full of blue buttercream and one dozen cupcakes. Long-term, her plans are to make the Big Blue a tailgating standard for other cupcake/sports enthusiasts at ODU football games, this Fall.

Berry good:  The new cupcake consists of a blueberry cupcake, spiked with liquor, frosted with blueberry champagne frosting and topped with seasonal blueberries.

It ain’t over til the fat lady…: Customer response to the contest has been so good and there were so many wonderful suggestions made, that owner Dawn Eskins has decided to continue accepting suggestions and take on the next landmark, 200 flavors. “Since we began the campaign, two Midwestern bakeries claim to be closing in on 200 flavors but their tabulation methods are questionable, counting sugarfree vanilla different from regular vanilla, for example. With our customers help we are already approaching 175 unique flavors, how cool is that?”

Papparrazi:  Carolina Cupcakery’s announcement coincided with the ArtIEverywhere Closing Night Celebration and AltDaily’s kickoff of the Norfology campaign.
