Chesapeake women with power drills and sweet moves almost starred in TLC’s new “CakeBoss” spinoff, “DC Cupcakes”

In November ‘09, TLC Discovery Channel’s casting directors began talking to Carolina Cupcakery about starring in a show that followed the daily trials of a family-owned cupcake bakery. TLC and “Cake Boss” producers eventually chose Georgetown Cupcake and, on Friday July 16 , they will unveil “DC Cupcakes” to an audience already drooling over the FoodNetwork show, “Cupcake Wars”.

TLC producers originally contacted Dawn Eskins, owner of the local Chesapeake bakery, because so many family members work there, and most are women. “The family dynamic has been a popular formula for TLC and we are the perfect girls to balance out burly Cake Boss guys”.  Daily calls from network casting directors continued for over a month, each one requesting new video and visuals, the results of which remain viewable at their website www.carolinacupcakery.com

Power drills and buttercream:  One of the things producers love about Carolina Cupcakery is the way they produce their cupcakes—with power drills and girl power. Because so few people work with real ingredients any more, there are few affordable tools that will cut through cold butter. When Cupcakery bakers tired of burning up mixers they took advice from Papa Eskins, inserted a concrete spatula into a power drill, and they’ve been mobile every since, swapping out batteries as they bake. “If you see power drills on ‘DC Cupcakes’ you’ll know where it came from”, says Eskins.

Sweet moves:  When producers asked how they manage to work around so many sweets, Cupcakery bakers explained that they have a mounted tv playing music videos nonstop. Any time “Single Ladies” comes on, the baking stops and everyone gets a workout with Beyonce. This blackmail-worthy video is also viewable online.
Bakers gone wild: No other finalist offered them liquor-drenched cupcakes because Carolina Cupcakery invented the spiked cupcakes that earned them a feature in Modern Bride magazine. Of the more than 150 different kinds of cupcakes they bake, 31 varieties are “spiked”.

Although Cupcakery bakers were passed over by TLC, Food Network has called about appearing in the next season of “Cupcake Wars”. No decisions have been made.
Powerful sponsorship: Not yet satisfied, Eskins is campaigning nationally, for a power drill sponsorship. “Wouldn’t you love to see a commercial that featured smart, young women using power drills to make buttercream cupcakes, in t-shirts that read, ‘Real Men Eat Cupcakes’?  If Stihl made power drills we could really keep it local because one of our decorators is a full-time Stihl employee, too.”

Carolina Cupcakery opened 2 years ago as one of the first cupcake bakeries in the country, the very first within a 4-hour radius of Hampton Roads. In 2009 they were recognized in Modern Bride magazine, participated in “Extreme Home Makeover, Jamesville”, nominated for “Small Business of the Year” and donated over 11,000 cupcakes to local churches, schools and charities.

The main bakery is located in the Hickory section of Chesapeake, with pick up locations at Norfolk’s Five Points Community Farm Market at 26th and Church Street, and in The Village Cork and Bean in Duck, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
